Bird nest removal from chimneys

Blocked chimneys cleared safely and legally, then a guard fitted so the birds don't come back next spring.

Why nests in chimneys are dangerous

Jackdaws in particular love chimneys, and they can drop a huge amount of twigs and nesting material down the flue. A blocked flue stops smoke escaping, which means carbon monoxide can build up in your home.

Think there's a nest in your chimney? Don't light the fire until it's been checked and cleared.

Signs of a nest

  • Twigs, straw or debris falling into the grate or stove
  • Birds seen going in and out of the chimney pot
  • Scratching or chirping noises from the chimney
  • Smoke coming back into the room when you light the fire

Removing nests legally

All wild birds, their eggs and active nests are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. That means a nest can't be removed while it's being built or used, which is mainly during the spring and summer nesting season.

We'll check the chimney first. Once the nest is no longer in use, we remove it, sweep the flue and check it's drawing properly again.

Stop them coming back

Birds often return to the same chimney year after year. Fitting a bird guard or cowl once the nest is cleared is the best way to stop it happening again. See chimney pots and cowls.

Common questions

Can you remove a nest during nesting season?

Not if it's in use. Active nests, eggs and chicks are protected by law. We'll check the chimney, and once the nest is no longer in use we can remove it and fit a guard.

Is it safe to light the fire if there might be a nest?

No. A nest can block the flue and cause smoke and carbon monoxide to come back into the room. Have the chimney checked first.

How do I stop birds nesting again?

Fit a bird guard or cowl to the chimney pot once the nest has been cleared. We can do both in the same visit.
