"Great service every time. We have used Marsdens for a few years now for our annual chimney sweep. They are always so reliable and have recently replaced the glass in our fire, which we are so pleased with. Would highly recommend."
Chimney sweeping in Wigan
Clean, certified chimney sweeping for open fires, multi-fuel and wood burning stoves. Our speciality for over 35 years.
Why get your chimney swept?
Soot and tar build up inside the flue every time you light a fire. Left alone, that build-up narrows the flue, stops your fire drawing properly and can catch fire. A blocked or partly blocked flue can also push carbon monoxide back into the room.
A regular sweep keeps your fire burning efficiently, cuts the risk of a chimney fire, and gives you a certificate to show your insurer or a buyer if you sell your home.
What's included
- Dust sheets laid and the fireplace opening sealed, so your room stays clean
- Sweeping with traditional brushes or power sweeping, depending on your flue
- Removal of soot, debris and old nesting material
- Smoke draw test to check the flue is clear and drawing properly
- Visual check of the fire, stove and chimney, with honest advice on anything we spot
- NACS sweep certificate issued after every sweep
Power sweeping
Power sweeping uses rotating brushes or whips to scour the inside of the flue. It's ideal for stubborn soot and tar deposits that a traditional brush can't shift, and for flexible flue liners that need a thorough but gentle clean.
Signs your chimney needs sweeping: smoke coming back into the room, a sooty or tarry smell, stove glass blackening quickly, the fire struggling to stay lit, or debris and twigs falling into the grate.
Open fires and stoves
We sweep every kind of domestic chimney, from open fires in older terraced houses to modern multi-fuel and wood burning stoves. If your stove needs attention, we can also replace worn parts such as glass, fire bricks and baffles while we're there.

What customers say
"I phoned Marsdens as we needed the chimney sweeping for the sale of the house. Cameron was very prompt in trying to fit us in, he was very knowledgeable, and clean. Our log burner now looks brand new as he also installed new bricks and baffle."

Common questions
How often should I get my chimney swept?
At least once a year. If you burn wood or coal regularly, more often is wise, ideally before and after the burning season. We can advise based on your fuel and how much you use your fire.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. As NACS registered sweeps we issue a certificate after every sweep. Many home insurers ask for proof that your chimney has been swept, and buyers often ask for one when you sell your house.
Will it make a mess?
No. We sheet off the fireplace and surrounding floor, seal the opening and work clean, leaving your room as we found it.
Do you sweep stoves as well as open fires?
Yes. We sweep open fires, multi-fuel stoves and wood burners, including flues with a flexible liner.
Should I let the fire go out before you arrive?
Yes. Please let the fire or stove go out and cool down beforehand, ideally by the night before, so we can sweep safely.
